Placing Home Cinema Speakers

08/15/2011 by admin divider image

Put your new speakers in the wrong spot in your room and you can suffer from a harsh sound, overblown bass and a lack of detail.

LEFT AND RIGHT FRONT CHANNEL SPEAKERS

Put the left and right speakers either side of your TV. But if you have an older tube TV don’t put them to close or you’ll end up damaging your TV’s picture tube. Manufacturers do make magnetically shielded speakers which won’t damage your CRT TV.
Angle both speakers slightly so that if you drew a line from each tweeter the two speakers would be the bass of a triangle whose apex is at your seating position.

CENTRE CHANNEL

Place the centre channel above or below the screen so it’s at ear height when you’re seated. If you have to put it below the screen angle it upwards so the drivers are facing your ears.

REAR SPEAKERS

Place the two rear speakers at 90 degrees, or parallel to the listening position. You can have them well behind the seating position as long as your receiver has a setting to adjust each of your speakers to sound best in your sized room.

SUB-WOOFER

Place the subwoofer on the same plane as the front three speakers. Bass is said to be non-directional but a badly located or tuned sub-woofer can really draw attention to itself. If you put the sub-woofwer too close to room corners you’ll accentuate the bass and it will sound wild and wooly.
